This is the single most useful planning post we could write before kickoff. The 2026 World Cup is the largest football tournament ever staged, with 48 nations playing 104 matches across 16 host cities and 39 days. This guide covers the dates, the new format, the groups, the stadiums, England's and Scotland's fixtures, the UK kick-off times, and exactly how to watch every match free-to-air on the BBC and ITV.
Bookmark this post. The schedule is complex by previous World Cup standards, and the cluster system means group-stage matches happen in geographic regions that affect kick-off times in unfamiliar ways. We will work through it all in plain English.
The 2026 World Cup Dates: When Does It Actually Start and End?
The 2026 World Cup runs from Thursday 11 June 2026 to Sunday 19 July 2026. That is 39 days from opening match to final, the longest single tournament window in World Cup history. The opening match is Mexico against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, kicking off at 8pm UK time on 11 June. The final is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19 July, also at 8pm UK time.
The tournament breaks into five distinct phases. The group stage runs from 11 June to 27 June. The new round of 32 runs from 28 June to 3 July. The round of 16 runs from 4 to 7 July. The quarter-finals are on 9 and 11 July. The semi-finals are on 14 and 15 July. The third-place playoff is on 18 July, and the final is on 19 July.
UK kick-off times vary widely because of the spread of North American time zones. Matches in the Eastern cluster (East Coast US and Toronto) kick off in the UK afternoon or early evening. Matches in the Central cluster (Mexico, Texas, Kansas City) kick off in the UK evening or late evening. Matches in the Western cluster (West Coast US, Vancouver) kick off in the UK late evening or early morning. The earliest matches kick off around 5pm UK time. The latest matches kick off around 4am UK time. Most major matches involving England, Scotland and other UK-relevant teams fall in the evening UK slot.
The New 48-Team, 12-Group Format Explained
The 2026 tournament introduces a new structure that has not been used at any previous World Cup. 48 nations are split into 12 groups of four teams. Every team plays the other three teams in their group once. Group winners and runners-up automatically progress to the new round of 32. The eight best third-placed teams across the 12 groups also progress, giving 32 teams in the knockout phase.
The round of 32 is the new element. Previous World Cups went from a 32-team group stage directly to the round of 16. With 48 teams now in the tournament, an additional knockout round was needed to bring the field down to 16 teams while preserving the geometry of the bracket. The round of 32 takes place between 28 June and 3 July, with the round of 16 immediately following.
A new FIFA rule introduced for 2026 means the top four seeded nations (Argentina, Spain, France and England) cannot meet each other until the semi-finals if they all top their groups. This is designed to ensure a more balanced distribution of the elite teams across the knockout bracket, removing the possibility of, for example, France meeting Argentina in the round of 16 as happened to be possible at recent tournaments. The rule rewards group winners with the easier knockout path.
All 12 Groups and Who Is Playing Who
The 12 groups for the 2026 World Cup are as follows. Group winners progress automatically. Runners-up progress automatically. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also progress to the round of 32.
Group A: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czechia. Mexico opens the tournament against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June.
Group B: Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland. Canada open their first home World Cup against Bosnia on 12 June.
Group C: Brazil, Haiti, Morocco, Scotland. Scotland's group, with the five-time champions Brazil and AFCON contenders Morocco. Often referred to as one of the toughest groups of the tournament.
Group D: USA, Paraguay, Türkiye, Australia. The USA's home group, with Pochettino's squad opening against Paraguay on 13 June.
Group E: Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador. Curaçao making their first World Cup appearance in Group E.
Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Saudi Arabia and one other (final qualifier confirmed in March 2026).
Group G: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand. Mohamed Salah's first World Cup, with Egypt opening against Belgium.
Group H: Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde. Spain enter as one of the title contenders.
Group I: France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq. Widely called the "Group of Death" with France, Haaland's Norway and AFCON-disputed champions Senegal.
Group J: Argentina, Austria, Algeria, Jordan. Defending champions Argentina with the favourable group draw befitting their top seeding.
Group K: Portugal and three other nations. Cristiano Ronaldo's likely final World Cup.
Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama. England's group, with the Croatia rematch the immediate headline fixture.
England's Group L Fixtures and UK Kick-Off Times
England are in Group L and finished qualification with a perfect record: 8 wins from 8, zero goals conceded. They travel to North America as one of the genuine title contenders and as one of the top four seeded nations under the new format. The three group-stage fixtures are:
England v Croatia. Wednesday 17 June, 9pm UK time, Dallas. Live on ITV1, ITVX and STV. The Croatia rematch is the marquee opening fixture for England, with both nations carrying the memory of their 2018 semi-final meeting.
England v Ghana. Tuesday 23 June, evening kick-off UK time, exact slot to be confirmed. Live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
England v Panama. Saturday 27 June, 10pm UK time. Live on ITV1, ITVX and STV.
If England progress to the knockout rounds, the BBC has the rights to three of England's potential knockout games (round of 32, round of 16, semi-final), with ITV holding rights to potential quarter-final coverage. The final on 19 July is broadcast simultaneously on both BBC and ITV.
Scotland's Group C Fixtures and UK Kick-Off Times
Scotland qualified for their first World Cup since 1998, and have arguably the toughest group of any home nation. Group C contains Brazil, Morocco and Haiti.
Scotland v Haiti. Saturday 13 June, evening kick-off UK time. Live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and BBC Scotland. The opening match for Scotland and the most likely fixture from which they can take three points.
Scotland v Morocco. Friday 19 June, 11pm UK time. Live on ITV1, ITVX and STV.
Scotland v Brazil. Wednesday 24 June, evening kick-off UK time. Live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and BBC Scotland. The five-time champions on the final matchday of the group.

Both semi-finals are played at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, capacity 80,000. All quarter-final and knockout-from-quarter-final-onwards matches are played in the United States.
How to Watch Every Match Free in the UK on BBC and ITV
The UK broadcasting deal for the 2026 World Cup splits coverage between the BBC and ITV, with every single one of the 104 matches available free-to-air on either BBC, ITV or STV. There is no PPV component, no subscription service involvement, and no paywall on any match. This is the same arrangement that has covered the last several World Cups and will continue under both broadcasters' current rights deals.
ITV opens the tournament with the first two matches, including Mexico v South Africa on 11 June. ITV will broadcast 29 group-stage matches in total. The BBC will broadcast the remaining group-stage matches. From the round of 32 onwards, coverage is split between the two broadcasters based on a pre-agreed rota, with the final broadcast simultaneously on both BBC One and ITV1.
Every match is also streamed live on BBC iPlayer (for BBC matches) and ITVX (for ITV matches). STV covers the same ITV schedule in Scotland, with STV Player providing the equivalent streaming option. There is no paid streaming alternative needed. The free-to-air arrangement covers all 104 matches across all 39 tournament days, including all knockout matches and the final.
For the major matches, downloading the BBC iPlayer and ITVX apps before the tournament begins is the practical recommendation. The live streams handle peak load reliably, and the apps allow you to watch on TV (via Chromecast, Apple TV or smart TV apps), tablet or phone. The free-to-air arrangement means the tournament has the largest potential UK audience of any World Cup in history.
When the Knockouts and Final Happen
The knockout structure for 2026 is the new piece. With 48 teams in the group stage and 32 teams progressing to the knockouts, an extra round of 32 has been added.
Round of 32: 28 June to 3 July. 16 matches across this window. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams.
Round of 16: 4 to 7 July. 8 matches. The traditional last-16 stage.
Quarter-finals: 9 and 11 July. 4 matches across the two days.
Semi-finals: 14 and 15 July. AT&T Stadium in Dallas hosts both.
Third-place playoff: Saturday 18 July.
Final: Sunday 19 July, 8pm UK time, MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. Live simultaneously on BBC One, ITV1, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
"What strikes us at MJK every time the schedule lands is how many people in the UK underestimate how much football this World Cup actually contains. 104 matches across 39 days. Every single one free-to-air. The first time you can plan an entire summer around one tournament without ever paying for a single match."

Getting the Shirts for the Tournament
With 48 nations competing across 39 days, the number of national team shirts that will be visible on UK televisions during the 2026 World Cup is the highest in tournament history. The kit reveals across November 2025 and March 2026 produced 96 home and away shirts, the largest single-tournament kit cycle ever produced, with significantly more variety than any 32-team tournament.
For collectors who want to capture a moment from this tournament without committing to a specific nation in advance, MJK's dedicated 2026 World Cup box includes all 48 competing nations in the rotation, with one authentic national team shirt arriving at your door at £49.99. The shirt is a surprise. The connection to whatever happens on the pitch this summer is the point.
MJK has shipped more than 100,000 boxes to date and the global supply network spans 53 countries. England, Brazil and Argentina are consistently among the three most-pulled nations across the rotation, with England moving to genuinely front-of-mind status during any tournament window. Around one in seven MJK customers who order during a tournament window tells us they ended up actively following a nation they had never paid attention to before, simply because that nation's shirt arrived in their box. For the 2026 World Cup specifically, with three host nations playing on home soil and several new World Cup nations in the field including Curaçao and Cape Verde, the rotation is more varied than at any previous tournament. The dedicated 2026 World Cup box includes all 48 competing nations from launching range, and the full World Cup 2026 collection covers the wider tournament range.
One MJK customer ordered a mystery box during the 2022 World Cup and pulled out a Morocco home shirt. They had no prior connection to the Atlas Lions. They wore the shirt through Morocco's run to the semi-finals and ended up ordering a second Morocco shirt from the retro collection six months later. The pattern, where a mystery box creates a connection that a deliberate purchase then completes, is one MJK sees repeatedly through tournament windows.
As seen on BBC Dragons' Den. Mystery Jersey King appeared on BBC Dragons' Den and secured investment from Sara Davies. Every shirt in the MJK collection is authenticated before it ships. Read the full story here.
